Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome to your American Government class! I look forward to working with you and your child in what I hope will be a very successful and exciting school year at Smiths Station High School!
In order to achieve that success, it is important that we develop a positive working relationship and maintain open lines of communication. Please refer to Google Classroom often for updated classroom information and please do not hesitate to contact me if you should have any questions (whitlock.teresa@lee.k12.al.us).
For those of you who do not know me, this is my twenty-sixth year teaching in Lee County. My first seven years were right here at Smiths Station High School, teaching Speech, Creative Writing, and U.S. History. I also taught 8th grade World History at Wacoochee Junior High School for three years. Fifteen years ago I returned to Smiths Station High School to teach English and Social Studies. It has been great working with high school students again! Smiths Station High School is a great school!
I have lived in Phenix City/Smiths Station for most of my life and, as a teacher, I have been actively involved in my community, from coaching cheerleading and dance to sponsoring numerous clubs and organizations. My interests include reading, traveling, cooking, sewing and spending time with my children and grandchildren. I have a son, Cole, who is in the eleventh grade and I have four grown children/step-children, all of whom have graduated from Smiths Station High School. We have seven grandchildren! Our last one was born in April of 2020!
I have a M.S. degree in English from Troy University and a B.S. degree in Social Sciences from Auburn University. I have also completed additional course work in Educational Leadership at Troy University. I am a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Council of Social Studies. I was the Smiths Station High School Teacher of the Year and the Lee County Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2015-2016.
As you can see, I bring a variety of experience to the classroom and I make every attempt to help your child experience success. Again, I look forward to working with you and your child. I hope to see you at school in the near future!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Whitlock
