    ATTENDANCE / NON ATTENDANCE

The Lee County Board of Education views regular student attendance as a precursor for academic success. It is the policy of Lee County Schools that course content and grading procedures are to be structured so that regular attendance is necessary in order to successfully complete course requirements. In compliance with the Alabama Compulsory Attendance Law, the Attendance and Student Services Department is designed to assist schools in ensuring that maximum daily student attendance is achieved. Cooperation from parents and guardians is necessary in obtaining our goal.

    Attendance is required for:

Children between the ages of 6 and 17 years are required to attend a public school, private school, church school, or be instructed by a competent private tutor for the entire length of the school term in every scholastic year except that every child attending a church school as defined by Alabama law (Ala. Code 16-28-1) is exempt from this requirement, provided such child has met the requirements as specified for enrollment and reporting. State statutes further provide that a parent, guardian or other person having control or charge of any school age child is responsible for that child's regular attendance and proper conduct (Sec.16-28-1, Code of Alabama, 1975).

    Responsibility for Explanation of Absences:

In all absences which occur without prior permission of the principal, the parent or guardian is responsible for providing an explanation within seventy-two hours (3 days). (Sec 16-28-15, Code of Alabama, 1975)

    Excused Absences:

    1.  Illness.
    2.  Death in immediate family.
    3.  Inclement weather which would be dangerous to the life and health of the child as determined by the principal/superintendent.
    4.  Legal quarantine.
    5.  Emergency conditions as determined by the principal/superintendent.
    6.  Prior permission of the principal upon request of the parent or legal guardian.

    Unexcused Absences:

    1.  Any absences not excused shall be considered unexcused. Unexcused absences result in the student being considered truant.
