Wellness Policy:
The Lee County School District is committed to providing school environments that promote and protect children's health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. The Wellness Plan has four components: (1) setting nutrition education goals; (2) setting physical activity goals; (3) establishing nutrition standards for all foods available on school campus during the school day; and (4) setting goals for the school-based activities designed to promote student wellness. Therefore, it is the policy of the Lee County School District that:
- The school district will engage students, parents, teachers, food service professionals, health professionals, and other interested community members in developing and implementing, monitoring, and reviewing district-wide nutrition and physical activity policies. The school level Wellness Committee shall be comprised of administrators, parents, students of upper elementary, middle and high school levels, child nutrition staff members, and school health staff members. This committee shall be responsible for conducting evaluations, identifying strengths and weaknesses, implementing and monitoring the Wellness Plan at the local school level.
- Food and beverages sold or served at school will meet the nutrition recommendations for the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the restrictions as implemented by the Alabama State Board of Education. Parents will be encouraged to provide healthy snacks for school parties.
- Schools will provide nutrition education and physical education to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical activity, and will establish linkages between health education and school meal programs, with related community services.
