Bachelor's degree in English and Print Journalism Master's degree in Secondary English Education

Ms. Amy Overton

My name is Amy Overton and this is my 4th year at Smiths Station Freshman Center. I teach English Language Arts along with two elective classes: Journalism 1 and School Publications. For the 2021-2022 school year, I will also be the yearbook advisor, co-advisor of the student council, and sponsor of the Word Games and Puzzles Club.

I grew up in Smiths Station and graduated from Smiths Station High School in 1990. I was active in the drama club and yearbook when I was in high school. After high school, I attended CVCC on a theatre scholarship and later transferred to Troy (State) University in Troy, where I earned a bachelor's degree in English and Print Journalism in 1996. I worked in Troy at the Troy Messenger newspaper for five years before moving back to Smiths Station. After moving home, I worked at the Phenix Citizen, now known as The Citizen of East Alabama, and Cable TV of East Alabama for more than 10 years before returning to school to earn my master's degree. In 2014, I graduated from Columbus State University with a master's degree in Secondary English Education. My first teaching job was at South Girard School in Phenix City where I taught theatre arts followed by four years at Richards Middle School in Columbus, GA. I am thrilled to be back home at SSFC teaching freshman English and journalism.

I live in Phenix City with my daughter, Lani. We have two dogs, Blu, a black standard poodle, and Hazel, a chorkie, who lives with her grandmother.
