Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Patricia Thorsen
Hello! I am Mrs. Thorsen and I teach second grade. I began teaching kindergarten for 16 years in 1996, moved to first grade and then to second. Second grade is my passion. The students begin to express more independence at this age. I encourage, and expect them to display more responsibility, problem solving strategies and collaborative skills during the year.
I have a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Columbus State University and a Masters's in Leadership from Troy. I'm an Auburn fan because most of my relatives attended Auburn. WAR EAGLE!!!
I am married to Jim Thorsen who is a veternarian. I have two daughters: Kathryn Jones (38) and Claire Key (36). Both daughters are engaged to be married. I have four grandchildren and three to be added to the family soon.
I believe in effective classroom management that is gentle and designed to create an environment that is most conducive to learning and enjoying school. It's about trust, influence, relationships and leadership. It's about the teacher and students being respectful and always trying to give their best. It includes strictness only in a sense that well-defined boundaries of behavior - whose only goal is to protect learning and enjoyment - are faithfully maintained. Within the space of boundaries freedom is present. For students, it is the freedom to love school, to thrive academically, and to make lasting friendships without being bullied, bothered, or made fun of. Each of us will make mistakes, learn from these mistakes, and strive to have our best year ever!
