Dr. Gene Butler
Dr. Gene Butler is the Director of Bands at Smiths Station High School. Dr. Butler received his Bachelor of Music Education and Masters of Science in Music Education degrees from Troy University. He received his Ed.D. in Curriculum and Leadership from Columbus State University. While at Troy University, Dr. Butler served as drum major for the “Sound of the South” Marching Band, principal tuba of the Troy University Symphony Band, and as an Undergraduate Assistant to the Director of the School of Music. Upon completion of his Bachelor of Music Education degree, the School of Music faculty selected Dr. Butler for the 2010 Outstanding Music Graduate Award. Dr. Butler was awarded the 2015 Outstanding Young Music Educator of the Year for the state of Alabama by the Alabama Music Educator’s Association.
Dr. Butler is in his 9th year of teaching at Smiths Station and 15th year overall. At Smiths Station, Dr. Butler teaches the Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Band. Prior to Smiths Station, Dr. Butler worked at Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery, AL. During his tenure at Trinity, the band program grew from 39 students to over 80 students. Ensembles under the direction of Dr. Butler has consistently received superior ratings in contests throughout the Southeastern United States.
Dr. Butler is an active clinician and adjudicator in the Southeastern United States. He is a member of the Alabama Bandmasters Association, Alabama Music Educators Association, American School Band Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, and Phi Beta Mu International School Bandmaster Fraternity. Dr. Butler and his wife, Karen, reside in Smiths Station, AL, with their children, Julie, Rebecca, and James.
