1st 9 Weeks
Welcome to 6th grade Science! We kick off the school year studying the AMSTI unit, Exploring Planetary Systems. Students always enjoy learning interesting facts about the planets and other planetary systems. We will do an experiment to determine the weight of soda on each of the different planets' surfaces. We will look at asteroids, meteors, and comets, and then finish off with some fun activities where we design and test rockets.
2nd 9 Weeks
During the 2nd 9 weeks, we will complete the AMSTI unit, Understanding Weather and Climate. We will look at different storms, convection currents, temperature, air pressure, and cloud formation. This unit uses many experiments and activities to teach the standards. Also, we will continue to prepare for the ACAP, since Science is a tested content area in 6th grade.
3rd 9 Weeks
Throughout the 3rd 9 weeks, we will be completing the AMSTI unit, Exploring Plate Tectonics. We will learn about volcanoes, earthquakes, faults, and types of rocks during this unit. We will create a volcano to erupt, simulate plate movements, and more to support our lessons.
4th 9 Weeks
To finish off the school year, we will study the AMSTI unit, Exploring the Sun-Earth-Moon System. We will look at the phases of the moon, tides, seasons, eclipses, and much more! We will complete many hands-on activities to supplement the lessons.
